Children of Disobedience

The epistles Paul wrote to the churches in the New Testament are just as viable today as they were when he wrote them. To the Ephesians, Paul wrote twice about the children of disobedience:

"Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:" Ephesians 2:2

Paul made it very clear to all those who walk according to the course of this world what their outcome would be. These walk according to the prince and the power of the air. The prince and power of the air is not satan or the devil. To find out who this prince and power of the air is, we need to look deeper into this meaning.

As we search, we discover the word prince alludes to the son of a king. Satan was never the son of a king.

The word power is the Greek word EXOUSIA and means "the power of choice, the liberty of doing as one pleases." But again we discover satan does not give one the power of choice to do as one pleases. He makes all who serve him slaves to do his will.

The word air is the Greek word AER and means "the lower atmosphere."

So who is Paul speaking of when he states they walk according to the course of this world and the prince and power of the air? He is talking about the children of disobedience who live according to the lusts and dictates of the carnal man. The prince and power of the air are the worldly rulers whom the children of disobedience --- by their own choice --- have allowed to rule over their lives in the earthly realm.

"Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as ours." Ephesians 2:3

The children of disobedience are those who live according to the lusts and dictates of this carnal system. The word conversation means "way of life." Those whose way of life only fulfills the lust of the flesh and the mind are --- by their unchangeable nature --- children of wrath. Those who refuse to change will never overcome. We know by the words of Jesus:

"He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be My son." Revelation 21:7

Only the overcomers are going to inherit and becomes God's sons. Today many are claiming sonship, and yet there is no evidence of overcoming in their lives. They still walk according to the course of this world, serving those who are in power in this life, fearing earthly governments more than God.

Paul talked about the spirit that works in the children of disobedience. The spirit of lust, greed, sex and religion has pervaded the modern church. One will quote God's Word, saying, "you cannot serve God and mammon," and yet own investments and bank accounts, putting their faith and trust in the things they possess. Paul admonished the church at Rome:

"For the Kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost." Romans 14:17

Righteousness, peace, and joy are all fruit of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, there is no Kingdom. Jesus warned all who are called by His name and live by His Word to . . .

". . . take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth." Luke 12:15

The prosperity message has blinded so many, they can no longer see their sin. Their conscience has been so seared, they can no longer be convicted of their sin. Yet they proclaim they are saved. Where is the evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in their lives? Paul gives further warning to the church at Ephesus:

"Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience." Ephesians 5:6

God's people have been deceived by those in whom they have trusted their lives. Paul gives us a list of those things which cause the wrath of God to come upon the children of disobedience:

"But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God." Ephesians 5:3-5

If any one of these things are in our lives, then we are deemed to be the children of disobedience, and will never walk in the Kingdom of God.
