The Great City
"Thus saith the Lord of Hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary." Jeremiah 51:58
For many generations the question has been asked: "Is the United States mention- ed in the Bible?" As we ponder this question, it would certainly seem reasonable that God would make mention of the most powerful, affluent nation that has ever existed on the earth. We know that the Word does not mention the United States by name; none the less, the United States is spoken of extensively in God's Word.
We must realize the uniqueness of the United States. This nation never became an empire with a large amount of disconnected land under one governmental control. The United States has never been under a monarch rule.
Let's look at the Scriptures to discover the United States in the Bible.
"And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." *** Revelation 17:18
The reference to the United States in the Word is as a "CITY".
The reason for this is that the United States did not become a great nation by throwing down other nations to acquire territory. Rather, it annexed, purchased and developed land. When territories wanted to become part of the United States, they became states and were annexed into the United States the same way cities annex other towns, or surrounding areas, to increase the size of their cities. Examples of these are Texas, Alaska and Hawaii.
The United States also purchased vast territories. These purchases included the Louisiana Purchase, the Gladstone Purchase and the Seward Purchase. The United States also developed land. It only took 74 years from the time that the United States declared their independence from England until the `49ers settled California.
Thus, we discover the United States is referred to as a "city". What other Scriptures reveal the United States in the Bible?
