The Eternal Working
by A. Abraham, OH
Have you ever thought about the word work? It has many different facets and meanings.
There are many kinds of physical works we can do with our hands. It can be done for others, or to sustain ourselves or families. It can be done willingly or grudgingly. It can be a delight or a joy, or it can be something that really requires a lot of effort. It can be the daily tasks of running a home or business, or that which we do for the Lord. Whatever it is, all work takes time. We need to WORK at taking quality time with the Lord.
In the Word of God several kinds of works were described when God told Moses to build the tabernacle. Many of the tasks to be performed for the Lord were: cunning works, woven works, beaten works, wreathen works and servile works, etc. These works took skill, wisdom, and much time. They were done with man's hands and could be easily seen.
But there is another work that usually cannot be seen and understood except by a few. This is a Spiritual work, a work that is going on inside of the few willing and obedient of His creation. This working takes quality time with the Lord. It is working an eternal work, NOT a quick, temporal work. We cannot see it working, nor can we handle it with out hands. It is what the scripture describes in ***Luke 17:20-21
"..The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.""
This "eternal work" is a re-creating work within us so that we may come into His image and likeness. I would like to share:
THE ETERNAL WORKING
"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." ***II Corinthians 4:18
There is an eternal working going on in my heart,
it is changing me, renewing me and giving me a fresh start.
This working is not visible for all to see,
it goes on quietly, deep inside me.
This working is not something I always look forward to,
but I know the end result is I will be clean and new.
This working is done by the Spirit of God,
He's healing my land and tilling my sod.
This working is tearing and breaking me up,
but OH! the glory when with Jesus I sup.
This working is teaching me to willingly die,
that fruit may come forth and "i" be no longer "I".
This working is teaching me not to try and understand,
but to look up and trust my creator and know I am in his loving hand.
This working is revealing the deceitfulness of my heart
and all the things that still need to depart.
This working quickly humbles me, it brings me low,
until the throne of repentance is where I go.
This eternal working takes you to the end of your rope,
it lets you see the darkness in which you grope.
It opens your eyes to the light of glory ahead.
It strengthens and encourages you by the Spirit to be lead.
This working reveals to me, when i have not taken time,
I can no longer see the Lord, but only that which I call "mine".
This working slows me down from my "business"
and shows me how nothing is accomplished in my "dizziness".
This working does not hurry as we seem to do,
but slowly acomplishes what God has purposed for his chosen few.
Yes, This eternal working is not done very fast,
but it is healing and delivering me from my fleshly past.
This working is going on, even when we think God has quit.
It seems like we are of no use when we sit and we sit,
This eternal working brings forth patience in our life,
it reveals all envy, jealousy and strife.
This working reveals the defiling root of bitterness,
the way we deal with this is through compassion and forgiveness.
This eternal working causes conviction you cannot push aside.
It stirs you and warns you when from God you want to hide.
It makes you deal with your unrepentant heart,
it helps you desire to change and be a working body part.
During this working some explosions take place,
they seem very destructive and full of unnecessary waste.
But it is God's wisdom that sparks the flame,
so the deep things are no longer hidden or try to remain.
It is when everything is open and all can see.
Then our land is cleansed, leveled and set free.
This eternal working is changing me more than I can say.
It's teaching me joy and rejoicing in a new and different way.
This eternal working is so precious to me.
It is my hope when with my eyes i cannot see.
It is my hope that Christ may be formed in you and me!
