"That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" *** Ephesians 4:14

Those who lie in wait to deceive are as poisonous spiders waiting in their web to devour those who run ahead, not watching nor caring where they go. The venom of the spider will come from the cunning craftiness and the sleight of men who lie in wait to deceive.

How can we recognize these spiders who lie in wait to deceive?

"The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces." *** Proverbs 30:28

The spiders are in King's palaces.

Can the religious systems today be the spiders who lie in wait to deceive?

The religious system of Jesus' day tried to trap Jesus by His words.

"...the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge Him vehemently, and to provoke Him to speak of many things:

Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him." ***Luke 11:53-54

The religious system today is still trying to find something they can accuse God's anointed.

"And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness." *** Luke 11:39

Is the same true today of the religious? Many who look good on the outside but in their inward parts is wickedness?

"But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." *** Luke 11:42

The religious Pharisees are still passing over the true love of God, and the correction needed in the lives of God's people that will make them acceptable in His sight.

"Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets." *** Luke 11:43

The religious Pharisees today still want pre-eminence and have not dealt with the sin of pride.

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them." *** Luke 11:44

The religious Pharisees are still promoting their dead works and wanting others to become part of their hypocrisy.

"And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers." *** Luke 11:46

The lawyers were teachers of the law. Today those who teach God's Word have bound heavy burdens on God's people.

"Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered." *** Luke 11:52

Those today who are supposed to have the keys of knowledge are hindering those who would enter into the Kingdom of God.

Who are these that lie in wait to deceive? Can those who call us brother and sister become our enemy? We need to remember it was the religious system that put Jesus on the cross. The same religious system was in Paul's day.

"Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him." *** Acts 25:2-3

Be warned! Be not deceived by those who call us brother and sister, but whose life does not line up with the Word.

"Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web." *** Job 8:14

We need to know how to recognize the enemy who lies in wait to deceive.

Have we put our hope and trust in the deceivers?

Hear what the Spirit is saying unto the churches.

"...the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way." *** Ezra 8:33

A Pastor's Nightmare

...excerps from a poem written by Edith Pence

In the night, I started walking
Down a dark and lonely path,
Others walked, but not beside me
I took my turn, it came at last.

I began to tell my story
Told of every righteous deed
Built my church and congregation
Lacked for nothing, had no need.

My accomplishments were many
All my life I've done my best
Then the Judge of all the ages said
Your deeds don't pass the test.

I saw the flames, I heard the groans
Familiar faces called my name
In my bed, I awoke, sat upright
I will never be the same.

by Edith Pense

I walked the lonely streets of life
I wondered and I roamed
I could not find rest for my soul
And so I walked alone.

I thought that I might go to church
And there I hoped to find
The reason for my living
Surely someone would be kind.

I found the church was dark and cold
They didn't want the likes of me
It seemed the gospel was not taught
His love I did not see.

Maybe if I try another
Many churches can be found
Surely here the love of Jesus
Will be shining all around.

I went into a bigger church
The steeple was so tall
I know that I will find love here
Aren't they Christians after all?

I didn't think it mattered
That I couldn't dress in style
I brought my open, hungry heart
And a great, big, friendly smile.

I thought that I would surely find
Some comfort in their care
But much to my surprise I found
A cold and icy stare

My friend if you are one who sits
Each Sunday in a pew,
Will they feel the love of Jesus
Does He radiate from you?
