The Man of God, Jeroboam,
and the Old Prophet
by Jeannie Kirkpatrick

The thirteenth chapter of the book of Kings, verses 1 to 31, tells us of a man of God and the events that led to his untimely death.

"And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense."

Viewing these Scriptures Spiritually we find a man of God went from Judah (the land of praise) to Bethel (the house of God) to prophesy to Jeroboam who is a type of the old church system.

"And he (the man of God) cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places, that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. And he gave a sign the same day, saying, this is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. And it came to pass, when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him."

Let's Spiritually view what the man of God from the land of praise prophesied to Jeroboam which represents the old church system. The man of God prophesied that Josiah, a child of the house of David would offer the priests of the high places that burn incense unto false idols upon the altar. When the man of God finished his prophesy, Jeroboam put forth his hand to destroy the man of God. When he did, his hand withered. The five fold ministry in old line denominations has withered and dried up because they have rejected what true men of God have told them about all their idol worship. The prophetic word of God is about to come to pass on the house of God, for judgment must begin at the house of God. With a repentive heart, Jeroboam said:

"...Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before."

Will the church system today repent of their false idol worship so the five fold ministry will again be restored?

"And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place. "For so it was charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel."

We must take warning from the man of God and not return to eat and drink and partake of the house of the old line denominations. As the man of God purposed in his heart, "Even if you would give me half of your house I would not." Truly the denominational systems have built kingdoms for themselves with their large followings and their big headquarters, etc. The man of God wanted no part of the kingdoms they have built. Not only must we determine to leave the old ways, we must not even return by the same way we came. We must go on another way, God's way, always forward.

"Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, and he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest."

"The old prophet said unto the man of God, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water. And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back. And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulcher of thy fathers."

After this judgment on Bethel, the house of God, the sons of an the prophet heard of this judgment, and went and told their father (the old prophet) of all the man of God had prophesied against the altar at Bethel, the house of God.

This passage of Scripture has a great message for all God's leaders today. This man of God indeed refused to return to Bethel, the house of God, in its present state of apostasy, desiring to go on in God another way, a new way, not yet traveled. The sons of the old prophet saw the new way by which the man of God went. When the old prophet heard these words, he saddled his ass, and went to find this new thing. The Scriptures reveal the old prophet found the man of God sitting under an oak. Where was the man of God? He had come to a place of rest beneath the strong Tree of Life, partaking of the fruit of the Spirit, and being fed heavenly revelations. But what did the man of God do? He listened to the old prophet. The old prophet represents the Pentecostal movement in the earth today. They say many things with their mouths, but their lives do not line up with their prophesies. How sad, the man of God was taken in by the old prophet's deceptions. How sad, the man of God left the Tree of life and the fruit of the Spirit to go with the present movement and partake of their food and drink. Not only must we leave the old religious church system and go on into the things of God, we must also take heed to beware of the false prophetic voice of the old prophet which lies. What lies ahead for the man of God who allows himself to be taken to the old prophet's house?

"And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord which he spake unto him. And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass. And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came the city, to mourn and to bury him. And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him saying, Alas , my brother! And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulcher whrein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:"

If today's men of God leave the place of rest beneath the strong Tree of Life, and allow themselves to be seated on the old prophet's beast of burden, and return with him to his house, and again partake of his false bread and drink the same fate will await them.

The lion who slew the old man was the Lion of Judah. Judgment had come upon this man of God. It is interesting to note that neither the beast of burden nor the man of God were devoured by the lion. The old prophet came and placed the body of the man of God upon his beast of burden and took him to his own sepulchre, or house of death.

This is the fate of all men of God today who return to the old church systems, whether they be that of the old line church or the Pentecostal movement. They too will die and be carried away on the church system's beast of burden. They too will lay in death next to the old prophets who speak lies and keep God's people in bondage.

The warning of this happening in God's Word is for this hour. Men of God, do not return by the old way. Do not be led away by false prophets to return to partake of the false bread and water of the apostate church systems. Go another way, go God's way, and search for the Tree of life where you can partake of the fruits of the Spirit and live forever. As shown to George & Jeannie Kirkpatrick

A Word

The pastors are speaking of drawing closer to God while their vision of Him grows dim. The "heroes" of the Christian faith, those spoken of highly in modern Christendom have become popular with the world. It is because there is no life in them. They speak of the world and the world hears them. They speak smooth things. In the name of church growth, methodologies have become the substitute for the head. Supposed revivals are spoken of in hushed tones when the materialism of the followers and leaders is spoken of. It is, though, deflecting the attention to what God is supposed to be doing elsewhere. When the lack of faith is highlighted, and when doctrinal deviance is decried, the messenger is silenced or ignored.

God in His mercy gave the beginnings of revival rain but the methods of God become the model of ministry - His being was ignored. Now, the leadership is deceived and deceives followers with promise of coming revival. But the body has become disjointed from the head. The churches of today have been seduced by the apostles of church growth. What the Apostle feared would happen has happened. 2Corinthians 11:3 "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." These false apostles speak often in scholarly tones of the "body of research" that they claim authenticates their methodologies of the "modern" church growth movement". In reality these "reasonable" methodologies are bankrupt. Professing themselves to be wise, they are become fools.

Church creeds, doctrinal statements, lying signs and wonders, and reliance upon the arm of the flesh are the norms of ministry today. Prayerless preachers bring powerless messages which result in pathetic people. The flock of God is being wasted and the shepherds (elders, deacons, and pastors) do not see the very destruction they are leaving. In fact, even when there is no real Spiritual growth building programs are pursued. Having seen fleeting glimpses of God's power, now the cart is put before the horse. Where once building programs were embarked upon because God had given souls for the harvest, now building programs have become the promise of future growth. Where there really is no substanial growth, building programs are still pursued based upon the promise of future growth. This is not faith but presumption. This stems from a wrong headed theology that has defined the church as an organization with a building. The church is the body of Christ with localized branches and has everything to do with people and nothing to do with buildings. This bad doctrine seems to be an unshakeable cancer. Just as images of God are made to encourage "worship" and become an idol, so a false representation has been made of the church, and it has become an idol. In fact disagreement over buildings (to or not to build) often destroy the unity of an organization. But here is the irony, that is exactly what God wants, He wants to destroy the idols of mens' imaginations and build in their stead bodies of believers seeking Him earnestly without worldly props. It is outside of the structure that you will find God and be found of Him. The solution is to seek God with your whole heart and He will bring the sisters and brothers together in a perfection of union centered upon Christ who is our life and being. In Him, we live and move and have our being. In quietness and solitide you will findMe. In weakness, your strength will be known. Rising early you will find Me. Outside the camp you will hear My call.
