The Amalekites Who Lie In Wait
By J. Kirkpatrick

The word Amalekite means "dweller in the valley". The valleys are where God's people are to grow strong by victoriously overcoming every enemy. In the time of King Saul, God gave Israel commandment to . . .

". . . go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." I Samuel 15:3

Why was it necessary for Israel to utterly destroy all that pertained to the Amalekites?

"Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt." I Samuel 15:2

Is it possible, even though, when we come up out of the land of Egypt (the world) that the Amalekite can influence our walk with the Lord? When we enter into our valleys, Amalek is there lying in wait to snare us with the snares of the devil. Jeremiah reveals this truth:

"For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper: and the right of the needy do they not judge." Jeremiah 5:26-28

Among the religious system today there are Amalekites laying in wait to deceive. How has this happened in our very midst?

"For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you." Numbers 14:43

The Amalekites are ever present from generation to generation, laying in wait to deceive, when we turn away from the Lord. We gain more insight into how the Amalekites were allowed to remain alive by looking at King Saul. King Saul was commanded to utterly destroy the Amalekite and everything that pertained to them; man, woman, infant, suckling, ox, sheep, camel, and ass, I Samuel 15:3. King Saul did destroy the Amalekite people, but he spared Agag, King of the Amalekites. God had commanded King Saul:

". . . Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed." I Samuel 15:18

In desiring the spoil of the Amalekites, King Saul made excuse for not utterly destroying everything that pertained to the Amalekites. In so doing, King Saul allowed Agag, the leader of the Amalekites to remain alive and well.

God's total desire is to have a people who will obey Him with their whole heart.

Samuel told Saul: ". . .Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, He hath also rejected thee from being king." I Samuel 15:22-23

Because of King Saul's disobedience in not utterly consuming the Amalekites, God's judgment came upon him, and his kingdom was given to another.

"And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David: Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day." I Samuel 28:17-18

King David had to deal with the Amalekites King Saul had left in the land.

"And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;" I Samuel 30:1

There are many comparisons we can make in this passage of Scripture to our day, and how God's anointed leadership must deal with the Amalekites in their land, overcome them, and utterly destroy them and all that pertain to them.

". . . The Amalekites had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way." I Samuel 30: 2

Today, as in the days of Saul and David, the Amalekites still lay in wait in the valleys to deceive God's people. This truth is seen in the book of Exodus:

"For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation." Exodus 17:16

Jeremiah also related these Amalekites leaders are in the very midst of the people laying in wait to deceive, Jeremiah 5:26. Because the Amalekites were not utterly consumed, the Amalekite leaders today have taken the women (the religious system) captive at their will. This has been true from generation to generation, and each generation must recognize this enemy in their midst and utterly destroy them.

"And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And He answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all." I Samuel 30:8

"And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled. And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives. And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all." I Sameul 30:16-19

David obedeintly dealt with the Amalekites in his kingdom, utterly destroying them, and recovered all. Today, God's anointed leadership must be encouraged in the Lord as David, to completely, utterly destroy the Amalekites in the land. Through the generations, the Amalekites have been ever present, lying in wait to deceive God's people, causing them to turn from the Lord. God's anointed leadership needs to beware of the Amalekites in the land. And as David. . .

Recognize the Amalekite enemy and utterly destroy it from our midst

Vision from K. Wells:

I saw a large whitewashed tower in a somewhat half built fortification. This whitewashed tower was taking up most of the space inside this fortification, and the Spirit revealed to me it was satan's presence in the church. This tower was whitewashed with both false righteousness and demonic traditions within the church.

More significant is what I saw and heard next. God said, that he will raise up individuals within the church, and as they take their place and authority within the church body and structure....they will each start taking a brick out of this tower, eventually weakening it and causing it to crumble.

In the vision I saw the crumbled tower, destroyed by the saints of God reaching up and taking out the bricks it was made of. But behind the tower, coming out from behind it, were poor, ragged, weak and emaciated saints of God. They had been overshadowed and dominated by the shadow of this tower and they came staggering so to speak, out from behind it into the light of God.

In my mind, the understanding was given that this tower had been spiritually suffocating the saints, but God said He is in the process of bringing this tower down.

The fact that satan could have such a position and prominence in the church structure and tradition, is serious cause for evaluating and scrutinizing our way of handling the living organism called "the church".

God free us from the bondage of what was......move us into a vibrant and powerful body, created in equality and openness, where everyone is an active part, and esteemed as such. Father release the ministers of God that are caught in the mold of being "the Pastor" and bring them out into the knowledge of what you offer not just through them but your whole body. Tear down the idols Father...clean the house...and set the saints free.   by K. Wells
