Rachel Huff from Ohio asks the Question concerning the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13:

"Is this how we are to pray at all times, or can we pray something different?"

This is the elders' answer:

Rachel, you asked about the Lord's Prayer. This is recorded in Matthew and Luke. Speaking of prayer in Matthew, Jesus informed His disciples:

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." Matthew 6:5

Jesus warned that when we pray we are not to pray as a formal show to be seen of men. We should...

"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:6

We are to pray before the Lord. Your prayer should be between you and Him.

"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking." Matthew 6:7

When we pray we should believe He hears us, so we do not need to ask Him over and over. He will answer our prayers in His time, not ours.

"Be not ye therefore like unto them; for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him." Matthew 6:8

God knows our needs. We only need to recognize our need before Him.

"After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed by thy name." Matthew 6:9

Jesus did not say we were to repeat the Lord's Prayer, but we are to pray after this manner. First, We are to direct our prayer to whom we want to address, Our Father. Secondly, we are to address the Father where He is, in heaven, in the Spiritual realm. Thirdly, we are to hallow His name. The word hallow means "to sanctify". We are to hold His name above all names, separated, undefiled, holy.

"Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Matthew 6:10

Next, we are to put forth our desire, and that desire should be that Thy Kingdom come. Our whole desire should be that His Kingdom come within us.

Next, we need to pray Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Our desire should be to yield to Gods will in our life as it is in heaven. The Father's will must first come in our earth as it is in heaven, before it can come on the earth. Whatever He desires in our life, should be our desire, totally yielded to Him. We should let Him know this by our prayers.

Next, we should pray:

"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11

We should present our needs to Him. Since He is the bread of life we should desire a daily portion of His goodness from His Word in our life.

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen." Matthew 6:13

Next, we should pray, Lead us not into temptation. The word temptation should have been translated "trials or testings" because the Lord does not tempt any of us. We are tempted when we are drawn away of our own lusts and trapped. We should pray God's testings and trials are not necessary in our life. We should do what He wants us to do, because He has said it in His Word, then chastisement would not be necessary.

Next, we need to pray, Deliver us from evil. We should pray we do not allow evil in our lives. We need to ask God's direction to steer us away from any evil thought, idea, or action.

We need to close our prayer by recognizing who the Father is in our life. Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen. It is the Father's Kingdom we desire. It is His power we need to desire in our life. And it is His glory most of all we desire.

We are not to recite this prayer, but all elements of this prayer should be in our prayers.
