Recently David wrote in and asked the question:
"Can we lose our salvation
once we have accepted Jesus Christ?"
Absolutely. We can lose our salvation by being disobedient to His Word and returning to our old way. Paul wrote concerning Israel:
"Now all these things happened unto them for ensample: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come." I Corinthians 10:11
Israel is our example. They fell into the same false security the church has been lulled into, of once-saved, always-saved, eternal security, etc. Israel was God's chosen people in the Old Testament. They fell into sin and away from God, and God rejected them. In fact, Isaiah informs us:
"But they rebelled, and vexed His Holy Spirit, therefore He was turned to be their enemy, and He fought against them." Isaiah 63:10
God had chosen them also, but when they vexed His Holy Spirit, He turned from them, and became their enemy. The Apostle Paul, explaining this to the church at Rome, wrote:
"For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy so are the branches.
And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
Boast no against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest no the root, but the root thee.
Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest He also spare not thee.
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in His goodness: otherwise thou also shall be cut off." Romans 11:15-22
David, you need to study this, and come to your own conclusion. Israel is our example. Did they have eternal security?
Also, consider the words of Peter who was given the keys to the Kingdom:
"For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire." II Peter 2:20-22
Not one Scripture in the Bible will support the once-saved, always-saved damnable heresy.
David, learn to work out your salvation, and keep your eyes upon Christ. I encourage you to spend much, much time in the Word. There are two other areas of Scripture you need to consider:
"For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the son of God afresh, and [put Him to an open shame." Hebrews 6:4-6
The writer of Hebrews continues:
"For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins," Hebrews 10:26
