Our Conscience

What is a Conscience? Does everyone have a Conscience? The Webster's Dictionary defines the word Conscience as a knowledge or sense of right and wrong, with a compulsion to do right. It is our inner thoughts or feelings speaking to us.

The Strong's Concordance gives this definition for Conscience: the soul as distinguishing between what is morally good and bad, prompting to do the former and shun the latter, commending one, condemning the other.

How many of you have ever had an argument within yourself? For example, you are at the Walmart store and you see something small that you want. You've got the money in your pocket to pay for the item. However, you hear a little voice telling you to put it in your coat pocket. Now, you know that it is wrong, and you tell yourself that. However, that little voice again insists that No one is looking, and the item would never be missed. Then another voice tells you that you have been taught that shoplifting or stealing is a crime. What you are about to do is totally wrong. Again, that little voice insists that everyone steals things, so you may as well too.

I had an incident like this happen to me when I was a teenager. My sister and I went to a drug store to buy some hair accessories. We both had money to pay for the things that we wanted, but they were small items, and they fit nicely into our pockets. Needless to say, a store worker saw us and stopped us on our way out of the store. They took us to a back room and called the Police. The Police came to the store and talked to us. The store did not press charges against us, but the Police did call our parents.

This was a very embarrassing experience, not only for my sister and I, but for our parents too. My sister and I both knew better, but we listened to the wrong voice speaking to us.

This same thing happened in the Bible. In fact, right after God created the first human beings on earth, Adam and Eve. In Genesis 3:1-24 tells the story about Adam and Eve, how they were given every thing that they ever needed. The only thing they were told not to do was this: "But of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die." Genesis 3:3

Well, as you know, the serpent (Satan), spoke to Eve (just like your inner voice or conscience does) and convinced Eve to eat the fruit from the tree. Not only did Eve eat from the tree, but she convinced Adam to eat from the tree too. After they had committed the wrong, then their consciences really started to bother them. In fact, they knew they had done a real wrong because in Genesis 3:8 "And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden."

This is the same thing that we all do today. We have two voices going on in our head, and we have to decide which voice we want to listen to.

In Amos 5:13 "Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live..." If we don't begin to seek the good, even as teenagers we too, will die just as Adam and Eve did. As you know, they didn't die instantly, but their lives really became harder to live. They had curses put upon them.

II Timothy 2:22 "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

The Lord wants us to listen to His voice. He has put a Conscience in each and every one of us. This has been there since the day we were born. It is our choice which voice we want to listen to. It is the Lord's desire that we have a pure heart and follow Him.

James 4:7 tells us to "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." When we listen to the Lord's voice we are resisting the devil, and he will flee.

Stealing is just one of the many wrong deeds that teenagers do. Whether you do the evil deed by yourself, or with a group of friends, don't think that just because you haven't gotten "caught" doing the wrong deed, that no one else knows about it.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."

The Lord knows EVERYTHING, and He SEES everything that we do. He will continually prick at your conscience and make you totally miserable. He will then give you what you deserve.     by Kathy Huff
